Dear Rovers North,
One day I pulled into a filling station in Rossville, GA. I spotted a Coniston Green Defender with its soft-top removed but its roof rack laden with serious adventure gear and numerous telling decals. The driver filling the tank looked the part of a National Geographic field man or a Wild Kingdom safari operative. Being a LR nut I felt compelled to speak with him about his admirable Defender 90. He was very friendly but gently derided it, saying, “Oh, this old thing? She’s got over 300K miles on her. I’ve had several. I drive them back and forth to South America.” No wonder it didn’t appear to be a “grocery-getter.”

Dear Rovers North,
I really wanted to extend my thanks to Rovers North for sending Matt Martin and Taylor Congleton to the 2010 SCARR event. I have driven 4-wheel drives for the last 23 years, but only purchased my first Land Rover a little over 14 months ago. Even though I served 8 years in the USMC and have participated in joint exercises with foreign branches of service where their Land Rover was our Hummer, I still did not believe they were that capable of a vehicle due to my own ignorance of their off-road prowess.

Over the last 12 months I have gained more confidence in my Discovery Series II, but it really wasn’t until Taylor and Matt urged me on SCARR to tackle some obstacles I normally would not have, due to my inexperience with the vehicle, that I realized how strong, sturdy, and sure-footed these vehicles are. Taylor, by far the best spotter I have ever had guide me (I also heard this from several other members).

Louise Orlando’s “Born Free Redux” articles were very inspiring. My daughter, Jocelynn, the college student/writer is my major supporter of me getting my Land Rover and already shares in my passion for it. She bought me a subscription to the Overland Journal for Christmas. After she read up on their website and Louise’s article, she emailed me that we should take our 88 on a cross continent trip someday. It was pretty cool. Thanks for the great magazine, Jeff. It is really informative.
